  • Son hit by stingray

We were wading Lost Lake on the south shoreline Galveston and my 17 yr old son Chase had just caught a flounder. He was getting the lure out and took a step and said something just bit the heel of his right foot. Ten seconds later the pain hit. The stinger hit just above the heavy rubber on his wade boot and punched right through the soft neoprene. We got him on the boat and short trip back to the house at Pirates Cove. Loaded him in the back of the truck with his foot in an igloo cooler of hot water. We got him over to UTMB as quick as we could. He was in serious pain. They hit him with some morphine and x-rayed the wound. The doc probed 2" up in the wound channel and found it was an in and out wound with none of the stinger found. They got the wound flushed out and cleaned up. We got him back to the house keeping his foot soaking in hot water and the pain finally subsided about 2am where he could sleep. Have him loaded up on antibiotics now with fingers crossed for no infection to set in.

He had just gone by BassPro last week to grab some raygaurds and they were out. Guys be careful I do not wish this kind of pain on anyone.

Dang and to think Ive been out wading in the surf in galveston quite a bit and not had any bad luck, but have heard that the surf in Galveston is just coated with rays. Def going to wear shoes from now on. One must always remember to shuffle the feet.

Hope it heals quickly and cleanly.

Thanks guys he is doing good. I was raised fishing and swimming on the coast. I was always barefoot or in an old pair of Chuck Taylor high top tennis shoes for the oyster beds. I have several friends that have been hit over the years but I have been really lucky the last 40 yrs. I have stepped on a few but never hit. We will wear ray guards from now on. I never want to see anybody go through that kind of pain again.

That looks bad. I hope he comes out good on this and it don't get infected. I've been lucky enough to never been hit, but I do the Texas shuffle religiously when surf fishing.

I pray he's OK. Why did you soak his foot in hot water and not ice?

Hot water helps kill the poison in the stinger. Peeing on it helps too.
